The
National Institute of Culture was created by means of
Law #63 of June 6, 1974 by the National Legislation Council.
According to the decree, it is in mainly in charge of "The
orientation, development, organization, planning, administration
and coordination of the cultural activities and programs in
the National Territory". The National Ballet, the National
Symphonic Orchestra and the Administration of the National
Theater are part of the first house of culture of the country.
The
National Ballet is created during the Presidency
of Mr. Arturo Sucre and until 1974, during the mandate of
President Demetrio Basilio Lakas, our first professional group
is officially organized pursuant to Decree Law 65 of 1974.
During this year, the National Government assigns the first
budget and salary to ballet dancers, setting a historic precedent
in dance in our country.
The
National Symphonic Orchestra was established on May
27, 1941 thanks to the initiative of Professor Herbert De
Castro and the support of the National Government presided
by Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid. Its Directors have been Herbert
De Castro, Walter Myers, Roque Cordero and Eduardo Charpentier
De Castro. At the present time, the Orchestra is composed
of 60 Panamanian and foreign musicians, and continues developing
and improving the quality of the orchestra at an international
level.
The National Association of Concerts
of Panama is a non-profitable private entity created
in 1962 by the initiative of the Panamanian pianist, Jaime
Ingram.
Its purpose is to promote the taste for classic music, through
cultural and educational activities such as the Annual Concert
Season, the Youth Musical Camps, Courses on Musical Appreciation
and Master Classes.
